Pet Food Recall
Wet Cat Food Recall
"An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food"

You all probably heard about this already BUT just in case you feed your cat or dog *ANY* of the following pet foods, you should really check.  This applies to Canadians as well.

A list of brands can be found here
but some of them are:  Iams, Best Choice, Nutro, Loving Meals, Presidents Choice, Special Kitty, some Science Diet, Ekanuba, Total Pet etc.  These aren't just the cans either - some of the list includes pouches.  (especially the Presidents Choice brand - sold here in Canada).

just some of the stores that carry the brands are: Kmart, Kroger, Walmart, PetsMart.  If you've bought any of the wet food listed at the above links call 1-866-895-2708 for more information.

Better safe than sorry.

The girls get canned wet food (they don't like the pouches for some reason) every 3 days and their brand was on the list. I checked the codes and the bottom of the cans and thankfully none of them were even close to the ones that were affected.

for the first time in five years, I bought some IAMS canned cat food a few weeks ago. :) Perfect timing on my part ! (not).
One other thing to think about...since they dont know what the problem at the factory was/is that was causing the sickness, they obviously havent taken any steps to fix it yet, meaning at any time, they could produce a new batch of food that also sickens pets, and again, would only hear about it from their customers after the fact, after additional pets get sick or die. Therefore, I would consider a conservative approach, which would be maybe ANYTHING produced from that one site might be suspect. When you look up the codes, they mention a plant code from the particular location that produced all of the bad food. I think it was 4197 or something like that. I'm throwing out anything made from that plant, and Im not buying any new food produced there. Just my personal 2 cents :)
Frankly, considering what is allowed to be in pet food, I am surprised this doesnt happen more often, and I am kicking myself for even buying this crap, as I am totally against it, but just caved for convenience recently :(

I got scared there for a min. I just started giving the kittys that special kitty food in the can. They love the tuna. I still give them the dry, but I give them a change a couple times a week, I would get sick of the same thing. I'm relived to see it was just the pouches of that...
